Walk of Ages Beneficiaries

Funds raised by participants in Walk of Ages Newark will benefit three local and deserving charities, each representing a building that has housed Oheb Shalom Congregation. The funds raised will be disbursed equally amongst the following three nonprofits:

Greater Newark Conservancy

The Greater Newark Conservancy promotes environmental stewardship to improve the quality of life in New Jersey’s urban communities. Founded in 1987, the Conservancy has four program areas – environmental education, community greening and gardening, job training and advocacy for environmental justice. The Conservancy has created the Prudential Outdoor Learning Center next to the former Oheb Shalom building on Prince Street. The dynamic outdoor “classroom” features thematic gardens and a greenhouse for raising nursery plants and for demonstration purposes. The Conservancy is also overseeing the multi-million dollar renovation of the Moorish Revival synagogue building which has been vacant since 1993. Walk of Ages participants will be able to get an exclusive peek at the inside of the building, which is on the NJ Register of Historic Places.

Lighthouse Community Services

The Lighthouse, founded in 1989, provides emergency shelter, hot meals, clothing and a food pantry to fragile families and homeless men, women and children in Newark. Lighthouse services to the community are available seven days a week and nutritious hot meals are served Monday through Friday at lunchtime. A clothes rack and food pantry are available for those who need it.

Lighthouse Community Services is a favorite charity of the Wells Cathedral Church of God in Christ. More information is available at www.isaiahhouse.org/lighthouse.
Community Soup Kitchen, Orange

oheb5a
For the past several decades, Oheb Shalom Congregation has been a member of the Community Soup Kitchen, a coalition of area synagogues, churches and a community group that provide a hot meal each Sunday to people in need. The Community Soup Kitchen is currently housed at The First Presbyterian Church of Orange, just 2 miles down Scotland Road from Oheb at the corner of Main Street, Orange. Even though the location of the soup kitchen may change, its volunteers are committed to its success and appreciate any funds raised during the Walk of Ages.
